The rank of Admiral (or full admiral, or four-star admiral) is the highest rank normally achievable in the U.S. Navy. It ranks above vice admiral (three-star admiral) and below fleet admiral (five-star admiral).
There have been 270 four-star admirals in the history of the U.S. Navy. Of these, 229 achieved that rank while on active duty, 40 were promoted upon retirement in recognition of combat citations, and one was promoted posthumously.
Vice admiral is a senior naval flag officer rank, equivalent to lieutenant general and air marshal. A vice admiral is typically senior to a rear admiral and junior to an admiral.
Rear admiral is a naval commissioned officer rank above that of a commodore and captain, and below that of a vice admiral. It is regarded as a two star “admiral” rank, which are also referred to as “flag officers” or “flag ranks”.
