Description

A Patronenkasten 88 B (Ammunition Box 88 B) was a German wooden transport crate used during World War II to store and transport 7.92×57mm Mauser rifle and machine gun ammunition.
These crates typically held 1500 rounds of 8mm ammunition, which were packed in smaller internal containers called Packhülsen 88. The Packhülsen were essentially sleeves (or sometimes small cardboard or tin boxes) containing the actual cartridges, often on clips. The exact number of rounds per Packhülse and the total count could vary slightly depending on the specific type of ammunition inside (e.g., standard ball, tracer, etc.).
The “B” variant likely denoted a minor difference or a specific production modification compared to the standard Patronenkasten 88. These sturdy wooden boxes were a standard part of the logistical supply chain for the Wehrmacht, supplying the K98 rifle, MG34, and MG42 machine guns, among other weapons chambered for the 7.92mm round.
